What the GameCube Controller is Leading To

Today, Nintendo made another big (very awesome) announcement: that Smash Bros for Wii U will be compatible with GameCube controllers.

Now, I am incredibly stoked for this, as the GameCube controller is my favorite to this day, but it hints at something else I’m equally excited for. No, I’m not talking about the possibility of the GameCube Virtual Console that could be on the way with this (though I would be happy for that, too!) I’m talking about competitive gaming.

My friend and I were talking about gaming stuff, like nerds, and he asked if I was interested in going to a League of Legends competition that’s held often in Long Beach, which is not too far from us. I told him I wasn’t too interested, but then our topic changed to Nintendo getting into the gaming competition scene. It all makes sense: All the details we’ve seen for this latest Smash point to more competitive nature, it looks like the characters will fight drastically differently (not just for the sake of being different, but to accommodate  various playing styles), and they even announced a mode that is in-game titled “For Glory” that will be centered around the hardcore gamers.

The beauty of this is that Nintendo could bring in more sponsors for these competitions, they can easily create tons of marketing/promotion, and they appeal to gamers like myself who have never been into competitive gaming, but love Smash Bros. I really do think Nintendo is going to get into professional competitive gaming very soon. And all I can say is, “Nintendo, make it happen!”
